“There is no set way to do things in the studio to be honest, you really just have to be open to go with the creative flow and what ‘s working, trying not to force anything. Creativity is a fascinating expression, and I really enjoy the mystery of how music comes out when we are in the studio.”
Tennyson
Tennyson King is a singer-songwriter. He delves into the world of folk rock/pop to convey a message of hope, lightheartedness and adventure. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, he’s travelled far and wide and has performed with a variety of people, such as Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Paul Woseen and Clare Bowditch, to name a few. He plays guitar, piano, as well as a bit of drums and bass and is currently learning how to play the Zhongruan (a.k.a. the Chinese Moon Guitar).
With Venus in Virgo, he’s always looking for a way to perfect his craft while remaining true to himself. Even if this placement makes their skills seems effortless, it’s just the opposite, Virgo is a teacher and a student and likes to lend itself to as many new ways of doing things as possible. If he makes it look easy, it’s only because he’s been doing this for a long time.
For his debut album, he had the chance to work with a variety of musicians that would help bring his songs to life. “My producer Ross Hayes Citrullo and I would work with each musician, crafting the right vibe and parts for their instruments. […] There is no set way to do things in the studio to be honest, you really just have to be open to go with the creative flow and what ‘s working, trying not to force anything. Creativity is a fascinating expression, and I really enjoy the mystery of how music comes out when we are in the studio.”
Most recently, he started exploring more of his roots by delving into traditional Chinese music, which resulted in his latest song “Piao Zou”, sung in Mandarin, which happens to be a version of one of his songs called, “Life on the Shore (Carry Me Away)”. And in true Cancerian fashion, it’s all about being able to make a connection with the ocean. Being a water sign, Cancer suns like Tennyson have a strong connection to nature, but most especially, bodies of water, since this allows them to feel safe and nurtured. He plans to record more songs in Mandarin in the near future.
Being a family-oriented sign, this also resonates with Tennyson’s need to share his roots through his music. Ruled by the moon, the exploration of emotions is also apparent in the way Cancerians express themselves as performers. Tennyson’s voice is comforting, and his lyrics draw attention to the various facets of everyday life and what it means to be free. “[Music] is a universal language that can really break boundaries between different cultures and evokes such strong emotions in different people. I wanted to be a part of this magic in some way and I wanted to be able to connect with people through music.”
Before a show, Tennyson likes to start his day with some exercise. Once at the venue, he’ll do a run through of some of the songs for a soundcheck. In the hours leading up to a show, he says he’ll return “to the hotel or hang out in the green room, […] try to relax and go through the concert in my mind. Then I hit the stage and play my heart out for everyone.”
One thing he wishes to see in the Canadian music industry is more diversity, and to have a wider range of opportunities provided for BIPOC artists. He also feels that “artists can better support each other by sharing resources, offering advice from individual experiences, and sharing each other’s music.”
Tennyson released his debut album Good Company in January 2022.
